What Does Grade 8 CAPS Cover?

The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) sets out what every South African learner must study in each grade. In Grade 8, learners study the following subjects:

  • Languages — Home Language and First Additional Language (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
  • Mathematics — algebra, geometry, data handling, and measurement
  • Natural Sciences — life and living, matter and materials, energy and change
  • Social Sciences — History and Geography
  • Technology — design, make, and evaluate processes
  • Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) — financial literacy and entrepreneurship
  • Life Orientation — personal development, health, and citizenship
  • Arts and Culture / Creative Arts — visual arts or performing arts

Each subject is structured into four terms, with specific topics assigned per term by the CAPS document.

How to Support Your Grade 8 Learner at Home

  1. Create a weekly study schedule — 30–45 minutes per subject per day is manageable and effective.
  2. Use CAPS-aligned summaries — Don't let your child study from textbooks alone. Condensed, curriculum-aligned notes save time and improve retention.
  3. Focus on weak subjects early — Don't wait until Term 4. Identify gaps in Term 1 and address them progressively.
  4. Practice past papers — Especially for Maths and Natural Sciences, working through questions is more effective than re-reading notes.
  5. Check the assessment calendar — Schools publish their formal assessment programmes at the start of the year. Use it to plan revision windows.

Common Grade 8 Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving revision to the last week — Grade 8 covers a large volume of content. Start revision at least 3 weeks before exams.
  • Ignoring EMS and Technology — These subjects are often neglected but contribute to the final average.
  • Not reading the question carefully — Many marks are lost in Languages and Social Sciences due to misreading what's being asked.
  • Studying without structure — Random revision is far less effective than working through organised, topic-by-topic summaries.
